"Then" and "Now", Quilt Show in Oakhurst.

"Then"

"Now"

The Sierra Mountain Quilt Show is open the first week-end in May, 4th & 5th.  It will be held this year at the Oakhurst Community Center.  There will be directional signs on the corner of 41 and 426, also our community Bear will have a quilt on it's back.. Be sure to take a photo and share on Facebook.

This year I am entering 2 quilts. One called "Then" and the other "Now" .

"Then" was given to me by a dear friend.  It was given to her by her mother-in-law, and years later was used as a furniture cover when they moved. Billie gave it to me when we moved.  No, I did not use it for a furniture cover, but kept it on my bed even though it was falling apart. I wanted to preserve it and to show how ladies made quilts from fabric they had saved. The quilts were tied with yarn.

I cut the best part out, covered it with netting,  bound it, and put a sleeve on the back.  Using those dimensions to create a "Now" quilt the same size, but with todays fabrics, the contemporary look.
Tying or quilting in the ditch was the traditional way, and because of the way these are assembled, I did not use any batting.

Using the flip and sew method by first cutting a square of cotton fabric. I lay the center black and white down the middle, right side up, then sewing corner to corner, worked from the middle out, using the flip and sew method. A brown paper bag held my scrap strips, so that I purposely would not color coordinate. Only thought was what length of the piece was to cover at the angle. Short pieces were used as the area grew smaller.

Great way to use up Scraps..

These quilts were first shown at the Administration Building for the Fresno State University. Everyone enjoyed seeing the comparison of the

If you are traveling  Highway 41 through Oakhurst, you will notice the addition of a tall, colorful Sculpture.

This is a beautiful announcement that you have arrived at Gallery Row, please turn in and discover our art outside as well as the glorious art inside each Gallery.

How about having your photo taken with this sculpture that Chris Sorenson created especially for our town.  Chris is 87 years young and has donated much of his time and skill to the advancement of the arts. Many people were involved in completing this project. Chris is known as " The Man of Steel".
His studio and gallery are in Fresno, just down the hill from us.

Postmarkd'art "Collage" Postcard

I signed up for 3 themes this round.. but knowing I have some other commitments, I thought I would get right to these.

Thankfully, I had immediate inspirations and they all worked.

Sometimes that does not happen and I struggle with how I will complete a task.

One of the ways I get started is looking through my stash of stuff, which includes, fabric, beads, wire, etc.   Now, this is sort of admitting that my studio is a mess. But as you see I did find some items that worked for me.

Copper mesh, straw beads, I had made a while ago, colored wire, wooden beads from a necklace, (painted with bronze), and hand made fabric netting. The background is my hand-dyed fabric.

One thing to keep in mind, when making a post card and getting carried away, is the thickness. You pay double for this privilege.

I hope these get to their destinations ok, one is going to Australia. The rest are in the U.S.A.
I did place them in clear covers. Keeping my fingers crossed that they all arrive safely.

Postmarkd'Art- Africa- 2013

I usually make the same card for everyone, but this time, the fabric shouted to change each image.

This was great fun piecing,, Haven't done this type of piecing in a long time, and it was very relaxing.

I always make one for keeping.  Which one do you think I should keep?

One more theme to do.. I have never been this early, but when Ideas Pop, one really has to follow the lead and get that done..  The tiny round circles are tiny buttons.. Don't think they fit with Africa,  but the colors worked and added to the design..

Now, have to wait to see what everyone else has for ideas.

Postmarkd'art Round 17 "Crow"

This is the start of the 17th. Round for Postmarkd'art. I had a bright idea for "Crow".. and scanned the card before I put the beads on it... Oh, well, you get the idea. The body is made with black felt, the tree branch is yarn. The rest is free motion stitching.

I have participated with this group since 2006. So many wonderful ideas, and an opportunity to try out new products or ideas on a smaller scale.

It is also an opportunity to have friendships in other countries. For instance I have sent cards to Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Canada, and Denmark. Singapore is now added to my list.

Almost done with my other theme card... will post soon.

Making a gift Card

Several weeks ago we went to our granddaughters wedding shower.  I wanted to make a card that   coordinated with my funny Tea Hat ( which I gave to her) and would also hold a memory for her.

Easy to find expensive or inexpensive silk flowers,  pull them off the stem and flatten the flowers a bit.. I used some Japanese rice paper that I had and glued that to the blank card, then glued the petals  on top.. Let that dry, added buttons, and a butterfly sticker.

I wrote on the inside with a pink and green gel pen.

Viola, a card to remember.

YLP Art Show

When ever there is an show, it takes hours of planning and organization.  This was a first for
artists at this location. We had a delightful time getting to know each other better and chat with art enthusiasts.   Most of the artists are from this area, Coarsegold, Ca.

As an artist, I really enjoy seeing a piece that I have created go to a loving home.

The next BIG Showing is Sierra Art Trails. First week-end in October.

There are several exhibitions in between and I will be posting about them.

There were about 14 artists in attendance, wood turning, wood carving, watercolors, pastels, mixed media, and fiber, me.

The Yosemite Lakes Club House has a lovely lake side location. Ducks and Geese showed off their young all day. It was a gorgeous day.

Thank you to all the volunteers that shared their time to make this a success.

Thoughts for a Thurs.

Today is trash pick up day.

No point on putting a photo of trash on my blog,  these wonderful luscious green leaves are for your enjoyment.

I receive the Daily Om in my email, and thought I would share this statement that struck a cord with me this morning.

"Most often, after you have completed something you didn't want to do, you wonder why you were so worried in the first place."

Don't worry, just get it done and enjoy the day!

Gallery Yosemite- Coming Soon

Yesterday I was at a board meeting for Timberline Gallery. Mark Heliger, is gathering artists that will be showing in a new Gallery, named Gallery Yosemite. It is right next door to Timberline.

Jack Lantz painted this lovely painting for the cover of the announcement card. Jack will be available to tell his story of the painting, check out the Timberline Gallery Calendar.

"Take the "Peace" of Yosemite with you" is so appropriate for the beauty of Yosemite.

Watch for the official Opening Date and Reception on Facebook and the local Newspapers.
